Authorities launched their investigation on June 24 after receiving an anonymous Crime Stoppers tip alleging Troncoso had killed Shepard, dismembered his body and disposed of some of his remains in an apartment dumpster.
By the time officers arrived, the dumpster had already been emptied into a garbage truck on its way to a landfill, per KLST.
Police stopped the truck and recovered a trash bag containing clothing, a blood-covered carpet and a torso with tattoos matching Shepard's description.
Investigators later searched the home Troncoso and Shepard shared and allegedly found more human remains hidden inside tubs of wet concrete in a vehicle parked in the driveway.

According to investigators, Troncoso admitted during an interview that she shot Shepard in the face, stabbed him and dismembered his body using a saw and multiple knives.
She also allegedly told police she mixed concrete in an attempt to conceal additional body parts.
The investigation later led to the arrest of Troncoso's father, Mario Valdes Troncoso Jr., who has been charged with evidence tampering.
Investigators believe he helped hide and dispose of Shepard's remains after the killing. Police have not released a motive for the homicide.
Calling it one of the most violent cases they have investigated in recent memory, officers said the investigation remains ongoing.
Troncoso is being held on a $2 million bond, while her father is being held on a $100,000 bond.
