The 68-year-old actor declared his departure from the beloved Paramount show in June, having already wrapped up his role in the fifth season the previous year. However, reports suggest that he expressed a strong desire to return for the latter half of the season, all while navigating the challenges of his separation from ex-wife Christine Baumgartner.
According to Puck News, Kevin's representatives orchestrated a phone conversation with show creator Taylor Sheridan, 53, who had initially penned most of the second half of the fifth season without Kevin in mind. The outlet disclosed that, despite Taylor's apparent willingness to modify the storyline to accommodate Kevin's character, John Dutton, the negotiations fell apart due to the actor's alleged demands for increased compensation, a reduced shooting schedule, and creative script control.
During divorce proceedings, it came to light that Kevin had explored the possibility of participating in a sixth season with the producers, but these discussions ended in deadlock. In Kevin's own words, "There were issues about creativity. I tried to break the log jam. They walked away." Kevin was also discontented with the decision to split the final season into two parts, stating, "I was going to do my movie 'Horizon' and leave that show, do my movie, then do (the second half). A show I was only doing once a year I was now doing twice."
Taylor expressed his disappointment over Kevin's exit from the show, remarking in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, "My opinion of Kevin as an actor hasn't changed. His portrayal of John Dutton is iconic and impactful. It may not alter the character's closure, but it truncates it." Meanwhile, reports suggest that Kevin's ex-wife had little recourse but to settle the divorce, given the actor's substantial influence.
The couple, who had been together for nearly two decades, put an unexpected end to their protracted legal disputes over support payments after Christine filed for divorce in May. A friend of the former model conveyed to DailyMail.com, "Christine didn't really have a choice but to settle because Kevin had all the power. Had she continued fighting, she would risk losing everything."

In a joint statement, the couple declared, "Kevin and Christine Costner have reached an amicable and mutually agreed-upon resolution of all matters related to their divorce proceedings." TMZ reported that if Christine were to contest the judgment, "she would have to repay Kevin more than $1 million and cover his attorney's fees for the prenuptial agreement dispute."
It is believed that Christine accepted the terms outlined in a three-page settlement letter. Her request for $850,000 in legal fees was seemingly omitted from the agreement, following a judge's decision to support Kevin's proposed monthly child support amount of $63,209 for their three children: Cayden, 16, Hayes, 14, and 13-year-old Grace. This amount fell significantly short of Christine's initial request for $175,057 per month, which she later reduced to $161,592.
