WITH an audience packed full of famous faces, including Shane Ritchie, Katherine Ryan and Denise Welch, the gala night for Elf the Medical really was the start of the Christmas theatre season in London.
And with outside temperatures having plummeted, as soon as you walked inside the West End's Dominion Theatre it felt like stepping inside a festive portal and into a world full of seasonal cheer – which is exactly what Elf is all about.
The musical incarnation, which draws on elements of the world-famous film of the same name, is an all-singing all-dancing sugar rush that's packed with energy.
Narrated by the guy with the big red sack himself, the scene is set from the off – and no one wants to end up on Santa's naughty list.
Combining plenty of witty one-liners with slapstick humour and showtime song and dance numbers, there's far more to the show than just the action from the film.
Buddy is played brilliantly with childlike glee while the ensemble cast – especially the Macy's shop manager and Walter's assistant Deb – are effortlessly hilarious too.

Considering the film was released in the early 2000s, the script is cleverly filled with modern updates – like Santa using an iPad to store all the letters he receives.
