Netflix has pulled the plug on The Boroughs despite the hit series topping streaming charts and earning one of the best review scores of the year.
The sci-fi drama, produced by Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer, was canceled just weeks after its debut despite landing a 96% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes and reaching No. 1 on Netflix's Top 10.

New Nielsen streaming figures also showed The Boroughs climbed to No. 1 across all streaming platforms in its second week, outperforming Amazon's Spider-Noir, HBO Max's Euphoria and Netflix's own The Four Seasons.
The series stars Alfred Molina, Geena Davis and Alfre Woodard as a group of retirees investigating a mysterious threat inside their community.

The Boroughs was reportedly planned as a three-season story, but will now end after its first season despite finishing on a cliffhanger.

Even cast members admitted they were caught off guard by Netflix's decision.
"Fortunately, the creators, who became our dear, dear friends, were able to tell us before the news came out, and we're all terribly disappointed," Geena Davis told The Hollywood Reporter.
"Honestly, I don't know what happened. I think it's probably rare for a show to not get picked up and to have it announced that it's not being picked up while it's still in the top 10. We didn't expect that."
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series reportedly cost around $10 million per episode, although a Netflix source denied claims the cancellation was linked to the Duffer brothers' planned move to Paramount.
